Instagram Story Unavailable: Why It Happens and How to Fix It
Seeing "This story is unavailable" on Instagram? Here are the 7 real reasons (expired, Close Friends, hidden, blocked, private), how to tell which one, and what to fix.

You tap a story ring, or a story someone sent you in a DM, and instead of the story you get a gray screen: "This story is unavailable." No error code, no explanation, nothing to tap.
The good news is that this message is almost never a bug. Instagram shows it whenever a story exists (or used to exist) but you are not allowed to see it right now. There are only a handful of reasons that can happen, and most of them can be identified in under a minute.
This guide covers every common cause, how to tell which one you are dealing with, what you can actually fix on your side, and what to do when it is your own story that followers say they cannot open.
What "This story is unavailable" actually means
A story on Instagram has two limits on it: time and audience. It lives for 24 hours, and it is only shown to the people the poster allowed. When either limit rules you out, Instagram does not tell you which one it was. It shows the same generic message for all of them.
That is why the message feels mysterious. It is deliberately vague, because some of the reasons (being hidden from a story, or being blocked) are private decisions the other person made, and Instagram does not announce those.

The most common reasons a story is unavailable
1. The story expired
Stories disappear from the story tray 24 hours after they are posted. If someone sent you a story in a DM yesterday and you open it today, the message usually shows "unavailable" because the story itself is gone.
The exception is Highlights. If the poster saved the story to a Highlight on their profile, it stays visible there after the 24 hours, so check their profile before assuming it is gone for good.
2. It was shared with Close Friends only
When someone posts to their Close Friends list, only the people on that list can see it. Close Friends stories show a green ring instead of the usual colorful one. If a friend reshared or sent you a Close Friends story and you are not on that list, you will get the unavailable message.
3. The person hid their stories from you
Instagram lets anyone hide their story and live videos from specific people, through the setting that controls who can see their content, or straight from the list of who viewed a story. Hiding is different from blocking: you can still see their profile and posts, but every story they add stays invisible to you. If you can see someone's posts but their story ring never shows up for you while friends say they post every day, this is the likely reason.
4. You were blocked, or the account is gone
If an account blocked you, you cannot see their stories at all. The same happens if the account was deactivated or deleted. A quick check: search for the username. If the profile no longer shows up, or shows no posts and no follower count, a block or a deactivated account is the likely cause.
5. The account is private and you do not follow it
This one catches a lot of people in DMs. A friend sends you a story from a private account, but you do not follow that account, so Instagram will not show it to you. The story is perfectly fine; you just are not in its audience. Following the account (and getting approved) fixes it.
6. The story was deleted or removed
The poster may have deleted the story after sharing it. Instagram can also remove a story that goes against its Community Guidelines. In both cases, the link in your DMs points to something that no longer exists. If it is your own story that was removed, you will usually get a notification, and our guide on what to do when Instagram says your post goes against Community Guidelines walks through checking Account Status and requesting a review.
7. A temporary glitch on your app or connection
Less common, but real. A weak connection, an outdated app version or a corrupted cache can make stories fail to load and show the unavailable message. The tell: it happens on many different accounts at once, not just one.
How to tell which reason it is
Run through these checks in order. Each one rules something out quickly.
- Is it only one account? If stories from everyone else load fine, the issue is with that account's settings or your relationship to it (Close Friends, hidden, blocked, private). If many accounts fail, it is your app or connection.
- When was it posted? If the story was sent to you more than a day ago, expiry is the simplest explanation. Check the profile's Highlights.
- Can you see the profile and posts? If yes, but the story never appears for you, you have probably been hidden from stories. If the profile is gone or empty, think block or deactivation.
- Is the account private? If it shows "This account is private" and you are not a follower, that is your answer.
- Ask a mutual friend. If they can see the story and you cannot, it is an audience setting. If nobody can, the story was deleted, removed or expired.
What you can fix on your side
Most causes are decisions made by the poster, and there is nothing to fix. That is worth accepting: no setting on your phone will reveal a story you were excluded from. For the cases that are on your side, try these:
- Refresh and check your connection. Pull down on the feed to reload, and switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data.
- Update Instagram. An old app version can break story loading. Update from the App Store or Google Play.
- Clear the cache (Android). Go to your phone's app settings, open Instagram, then Storage, and clear the cache. Clear cache only; clearing data will log you out.
- Log out and back in. This resets your session and often fixes stories that are stuck.
- Follow the account if it is private. Then wait for the request to be approved.
- Check for an outage. If stories fail everywhere and none of the above helps, Instagram itself may be having problems. Waiting is the fix.
When followers say your story is unavailable
If you create content, the more stressful version of this problem is people telling you they cannot open your story. Before you assume something is wrong with your account, check the settings that you control:
- Audience of that story. Did you post it to Close Friends by accident? The share screen offers both options and it is easy to tap the wrong one.
- Your hidden list. Open the setting where you hide story and live from people, and make sure nobody landed there by mistake.
- Account privacy. If your account is private, people who do not follow you cannot see stories that get shared around in DMs.
- Account Status. If a story was removed, Account Status shows it. That is also where you request a review.
- Timing. If people are opening a story you shared in a DM or a group chat yesterday, it has simply expired.
Why creators should not park important links in stories
Here is the bigger lesson behind this error. A story is built to disappear. When you put a launch, a sign-up form or a sales page only in a story, every person who arrives after 24 hours, through a reshare, a DM or a screenshot, hits "This story is unavailable" instead of the thing you wanted them to see.
A sturdier setup has three layers:
- Stories for the moment. Use them to announce, with a link sticker pointing to the destination.
- Highlights for the recap. Save the stories that explain an ongoing offer, so new visitors can still watch them.
- Your bio link for everything that has to keep working. The link in your bio does not expire, so it is the one place every reshare, DM and screenshot can send people back to.
The bio link works best when it points to a hub you control, with your important links in priority order instead of a single URL you keep swapping. Our guide to organizing your links by priority covers how to order them, and the link-in-bio mistakes that hurt click-through shows what to avoid.
That is the job a VisuLink page does: a single address at visu.to/yourname where your current links live, which you can update anytime without touching your Instagram bio. The free plan includes 5 links and 5 social icons. Add a QR code that points to the same page and your offline audience lands in the same place; here is where to put a creator QR code so it actually gets scanned.
Quick checklist
- Only one account affected? It is their settings, not your phone.
- Sent more than a day ago? It expired; look in Highlights.
- Green ring or private account? You are outside the audience.
- Can see posts but never stories? You were probably hidden from stories.
- Everything broken? Refresh, update, clear cache, log out and in.
- Your own story? Check the audience, the hidden list, privacy and Account Status.
Stories are made to vanish, and that is fine for the moment they capture. Just make sure the links that matter to your audience live somewhere that will still work tomorrow. Create your free VisuLink and give every story, reshare and DM a place to land.
Frequently asked questions
Does "This story is unavailable" mean I was blocked?
Not necessarily. The same message appears when a story expired, was shared with Close Friends only, was hidden from you, was deleted, or comes from a private account you do not follow. A block is only one of the possibilities.
Why can I see someone's posts but not their stories?
They have most likely hidden their story from you. Hiding a story is different from blocking: you keep seeing the profile and posts, but every new story stays invisible to you.
Why does a story sent to me in a DM say unavailable?
Usually because it expired after 24 hours, because it was a Close Friends story, or because it comes from a private account you do not follow.
Can I still see an expired story?
Only if the person saved it to a Highlight on their profile. Otherwise it is gone from public view after 24 hours.
How do I keep my links from disappearing with my stories?
Use stories to announce, Highlights to recap, and keep anything that must keep working in your bio link, ideally a link hub you can update anytime.
