How to Go Live on Instagram (and Get People to Show Up)

Going live on Instagram takes about ten seconds once you know where the button is. Getting people to actually show up takes a little more planning. This guide covers both: who can go live in 2026, the exact steps on your phone, how to schedule a live and bring on guests, what to do with the replay, and how to promote it so you're not talking to an empty room.

Who can go live on Instagram

Before the steps, check that your account qualifies, because this is the most common reason people can't find the Live option.

Since August 2025, Instagram limits starting a live video to public accounts with at least 1,000 followers. If your account is private, or you're under that number, the Live option won't be available to you. A few other things can also block it:

  • Teen accounts have Live turned off by default, and younger teens need a parent's permission.
  • New accounts may not be able to go live right away.
  • An outdated app. Update Instagram before you troubleshoot anything else.
  • Account restrictions. If Instagram has limited your account for a guideline issue, features like Live can be paused. Check Account Status in your settings.

If you're under 1,000 followers, use the time to build toward it: short videos, stories and collaborations are what move that number, and the promotion habits later in this guide work for any content you post.

Promote your live offline too: one scan takes people straight to your profile.

How to go live on Instagram, step by step

The icons move around a little between app versions, but the flow has been the same for a long time:

  1. Open the camera. Tap the + button at the bottom of the app (or swipe right from your feed).
  2. Switch to Live. At the bottom of the camera you'll see the formats: Post, Story, Reel and Live. Swipe to Live.
  3. Add a title. Tap the title option on the side of the screen and write a short, specific title. "Q&A: starting a bakery from home" pulls more people than "Live!" because it tells them what they'll get.
  4. Choose your audience. You can usually pick Public or Practice. Practice lets you test your setup without anyone seeing it, which is worth doing the first time.
  5. Tap the Live button. Instagram does a quick connection check and then you're on air. Your followers may get a notification, and your profile picture shows a Live badge so anyone visiting your profile can tap in.
  6. End the live. Tap the X or End button. Instagram then shows options for the replay (more on that below).

While you're live, you can pin a comment so everyone who joins sees the topic or a link-in-bio reminder, switch the camera, add guests, and hide comments if things get noisy. Instagram also lets you assign a moderator to help manage comments, which is a big help once you get past a few dozen viewers.

A live can run for up to 4 hours, which is far more than most creators need. Thirty to sixty minutes is a comfortable length for a Q&A or tutorial.

How to schedule an Instagram Live

Scheduling is the single biggest thing you can do for attendance. It turns a surprise broadcast into an event people plan around.

  1. Open the camera and switch to Live, just like above.
  2. Tap the schedule option (a calendar icon on the side).
  3. Add a title and pick the start date and time. Instagram's help center says you can schedule from 1 hour to 90 days ahead.
  4. Tap Schedule live video.

Once it's scheduled, share it to your story or feed. Followers who see it can tap to get a reminder, and Instagram will notify them when you go live. A scheduled live posted a few days ahead, then reshared the day of, consistently draws more people than a spontaneous one.

How to add a guest to your Instagram Live

Going live with someone else doubles the audience that hears about it, because both of your followers can get notified.

  • Once you're live, tap the add guest icon (a camera with a plus sign, usually near the comment bar).
  • Invite someone from the list of viewers, or search for them. Viewers can also request to join, and you approve or decline.
  • You can have up to three guests on screen with you at the same time.

Before a collab live, agree on the topic, who opens and who wraps up, and where to send people afterward. A guest who mentions the same link at the end sends their audience to you instead of leaving them nowhere.

What to do with the replay

When you end a live, Instagram gives you options to share the replay to your profile or download the video. Lives you don't share still go to your Live archive, which you can find in your archive settings.

Sharing the replay matters because most people will miss the live itself. A replay on your profile lets them catch up, and the best minute of it makes an excellent Reel or story clip.

If you download it, keep a copy somewhere safe. Archives and sharing options change over time, and a copy on your own phone or drive is the version that will always be there.

How to get people to show up

A live with no promotion relies on whoever happens to be scrolling at that moment. A little preparation changes that.

Pick a consistent time. A weekly live at the same day and hour trains your audience to expect it. Look at when your followers are most active in your insights and go live in that window.

Announce it more than once. Share the scheduled live when you create it, again the day before, and again an hour before. Each announcement catches people the last one missed.

Give people a reason to come live, not just watch later. Answer questions in real time, run a live demo, do a reveal or invite a guest. Things that only happen live are what make people show up live.

Put it at the top of your link in bio. People who see your post or story will often tap your bio link to find out more. On VISU, add a link at the very top of your VisuLink called something like "Live tonight at 8 pm" and point it at your Instagram profile, where the Live badge appears when you're on air. Turn the link on that day and switch it off once the live is over. You can see in your analytics how many people tapped it, which tells you whether the promotion is working.

Promote it offline too. If you teach a class, play a gig, run a shop or attend events, a QR code is the fastest way to send people from the real world to your profile. Every VISU account comes with a QR code linked to your profile, so the same "Live tonight" link is one scan away from a poster, a table card or a slide. Our guide on where to place your creator QR code covers the spots that get scanned, and QR codes for live events and meetups covers the timing when you're in front of a room.

After the live: keep the momentum

The hour after a live is when interest is highest and most creators go quiet.

  • Swap the link. Replace the "Live tonight" button with a link to the replay so people who missed it land in the right place.
  • Post a highlight. Cut the best minute into a Reel and point viewers to the full replay.
  • Answer the questions you missed. Comments during a live move fast. Picking up a few in stories afterward makes viewers feel heard and gives you content for the next day.
  • Note what worked. Peak viewers, the moment people joined, the questions that came up. Two or three lives in, you'll know your best time and format.
