How to Change Your TikTok Username (Rules and Limits)
How to change your TikTok username in the app or on a computer, the 30-day limit and character rules, why the change can fail, and how to keep your links working after.

Maybe you picked your TikTok handle years ago and it no longer fits. Maybe you're turning a hobby account into a brand, or you want the same name you use on Instagram and YouTube. Changing your TikTok username takes a minute. The part people skip is what happens after: your profile link changes, and every place you shared the old one stops working.
This guide covers how to change your TikTok username in the app and on a computer, the rules TikTok sets (including the 30-day limit), why a change might fail, and how to move to a new @ without losing the people who find you through links. Everything below follows TikTok's Help Center as of October 2026.
Username vs. name on TikTok
TikTok accounts have two different names, and mixing them up causes most of the confusion:
- Username: your @ tag, like @maria.bakes. TikTok says this tag is shown on your profile and makes up your profile link (tiktok.com/@maria.bakes). People use it to tag and find you.
- Name (nickname): the display name shown on your profile and across TikTok, such as in the For You feed, comments and messages. It can include spaces and doesn't affect your link.
If all you want is a different display name, change the name, not the username. It's lower risk because your link stays the same. TikTok allows up to 30 characters for the name, and you can change it once every 7 days.

How to change your TikTok username in the app
- Tap Profile at the bottom of the screen.
- Tap Edit profile.
- Tap Username and enter the name you want.
- Tap Save.
If the name is available and follows the rules, the change takes effect right away and your profile link updates with it.
How to change your TikTok username on a computer
- Go to tiktok.com and log in.
- Click your profile picture in the upper corner.
- Select View profile.
- Click Edit profile.
- Click your username and enter the new one.
TikTok notes that this option isn't available on TikTok's mobile web version, so use the app or a computer browser.
TikTok username rules and limits
These come straight from TikTok's Help Center:
- Once every 30 days. After you change your username, you have to wait 30 days to change it again. Choose carefully.
- 2 to 24 characters.
- Letters, numbers, underscores and periods only. No spaces, no emojis, no other symbols.
- No period at the end. maria.bakes works; mariabakes. doesn't.
- It has to be available. A username can be unavailable because someone has it, or because it's claimed by a suspended or deactivated account. TikTok says those may not be available immediately.
- Your old username is held for a while. TikTok says that if you give up your username, you won't be able to add it to an account for a short period. So switching back right away may not be possible.
- Verified accounts have their own path. TikTok points verified accounts to its support team if they want to change their username.
Why you can't change your TikTok username
If TikTok won't save your new username, check these causes:
- You changed it in the last 30 days. Wait until the period ends.
- The name is taken or reserved. Try a variation: add a period or underscore in the middle, or a word that describes what you do.
- It breaks the format. Too short, too long, a symbol other than _ or ., or a period at the end.
- You're blocked from updating your profile. TikTok says you can't change your username if your account is restricted from profile edits.
- You're on mobile web. Use the app or a desktop browser.
- Your account is verified. Contact TikTok through the Help Center.
Picking a username you won't want to change again
With a 30-day lock, it pays to get it right the first time:
- Make it the same everywhere. Check that the handle is free on Instagram, YouTube and your link page before you switch. One name across platforms is easier to remember and to search.
- Keep it short and easy to say. If people hear it in a video, they should be able to type it without asking how it's spelled.
- Avoid numbers and lookalike characters unless they're part of your brand. "maria_bakes_2026" ages badly.
- Think a few years ahead. A name tied to one city, one product or your current age may not fit later.
Our list of Instagram username ideas has naming patterns that work on TikTok too, since the character rules are similar.
What breaks when you change your TikTok username
TikTok is clear about this: changing your username also changes your profile link. Your followers, videos and likes stay on your account, but the old tiktok.com/@oldname address no longer points to you. That affects:
- Links to your TikTok in other bios (Instagram, YouTube, X, Twitch)
- Your email signature, website footer and media kit
- Old posts, videos and descriptions where you wrote "find me @oldname"
- Printed material: business cards, flyers, product packaging and any QR code that opens your TikTok profile
- Brand partners or collaborators who saved your old handle
Before you change it, write down every place your TikTok link lives. After the change, update them all the same day.
The fix: one link that doesn't change when your @ does
Here's the habit that makes username changes painless: instead of sharing your TikTok link directly everywhere, share a link page that holds your TikTok as one of its links.
With a VISU page at visu.to/yourname, your TikTok is a social icon on the page. The places you printed or posted keep pointing to your VISU address. When you change your TikTok username, you open your VISU page, update the TikTok icon to the new @, and every QR code, business card and bio that points to your page is correct again.
A couple of tips to get the most from it:
- Match the new @ on your VISU page when you can. If your new TikTok handle is free on VISU, using the same name keeps your brand consistent. Plan this one carefully: in VISU, the Free plan allows one username change, and paid plans can rename again every 7 days. So most people should pick their VISU name once and leave it, then update the icons inside the page as platforms change.
- Put the short address in your TikTok bio text. Bio text isn't clickable, but visu.to/yourname is easy to read and type. Once your account qualifies for the TikTok Links field, paste the same address there. Our guide on how to add a link to your TikTok bio covers who qualifies and what to do until then.
- Tell people in a video. "New name, same me" with the new handle on screen for a few seconds helps followers who tag you.

Quick checklist
- Decide if you need a new username or just a new display name.
- Check the new handle is free on your other platforms.
- Follow the rules: 2 to 24 characters, letters, numbers, _ and . only, no period at the end.
- Change it: Profile, Edit profile, Username, Save.
- Remember the 30-day lock before you change it again.
- Update every place that links to your old TikTok address the same day.
- Share one link page so the next change only takes one update.
A new TikTok username is a fresh start, as long as the people looking for you can still get there. Create your free VISU page and keep one address that stays put while your handles change.
Frequently asked questions
How often can you change your TikTok username?
Once every 30 days. After a change, you have to wait 30 days before you can change it again.
What characters can a TikTok username have?
Letters, numbers, underscores and periods, from 2 to 24 characters. A username can't end with a period.
Does changing my TikTok username change my profile link?
Yes. TikTok says the username makes up your profile link, so the old tiktok.com/@ address stops pointing to you. Update it everywhere you shared it.
What is the difference between name and username on TikTok?
The username is your @ tag and forms your profile link. The name is the display name shown across TikTok; it allows up to 30 characters and can be changed once every 7 days.
Can I change back to my old TikTok username?
Not always right away. TikTok says a username you give up can't be added to an account for a short period, and the 30-day limit also applies.
