Instagram Not Sending Verification Code: How to Fix It (SMS, WhatsApp, Email)

You type your password, Instagram asks for a code, and nothing arrives. No text, no WhatsApp message, no email. It is one of the most frustrating ways to get stuck, because the account is right there and you can't get past one screen.

The good news: most missing codes come down to a handful of causes, and Instagram gives you more than one way in. This guide walks through the quick checks first, then each delivery method (SMS, WhatsApp, email and authentication apps), backup codes, and what to do if you think someone else changed your details. Steps and menu names follow Instagram's Help Center as of October 2026.

First, the 2-minute checklist

Before changing anything, rule out the simple stuff:

  1. Request the code once, then wait a few minutes. Tapping "resend" over and over can leave you with several codes, and only the newest one tends to work.
  2. Check where the code is going. The code screen usually shows part of the phone number or email it was sent to. If that number or address is old, the code is going somewhere you can't see.
  3. Check signal and Wi-Fi. SMS needs mobile signal. Turn airplane mode on and off, or restart the phone.
  4. Look in spam, junk and promotions if the code goes to email.
  5. Update the Instagram app. An outdated version can misbehave on login screens.
  6. Check for blocked messages. If you ever blocked or filtered unknown senders or short codes, a security text can land in a filtered folder or never show up.

If the code still doesn't come, find your situation below.

Save your backup codes somewhere you can reach without your phone.

Which code are you waiting for?

Instagram sends different codes in different moments. Knowing which one you need saves time:

Moment What Instagram sends Where
Creating an account Confirmation code Email or text message
Forgot your password Login link or security code Email or text message
Login with two-factor authentication 6-digit login code SMS, WhatsApp or authentication app
Login from a new device Request to confirm it's you Another device where you are already logged in

Two-factor authentication (2FA) is the most common source of trouble, because it only asks for a code when you log in from a device Instagram doesn't recognize. That usually means a new phone, a reset browser or a borrowed computer, which is exactly when your usual setup isn't at hand.

Instagram SMS code not arriving

With text message 2FA, Instagram sends a 6-digit security code to the phone number confirmed on your account each time someone logs in from an unrecognized device. If it doesn't show up:

  • Make sure the number is current. If you changed numbers or carriers and never updated Instagram, the code goes to the old line.
  • Check roaming. Abroad, some carriers deliver texts late or not at all. Wi-Fi does not help with SMS.
  • Try another method if the screen offers one. If you also set up WhatsApp or an authentication app, the login screen can let you switch.

If you can still log in on another device, change the 2FA number in Accounts Center > Password and security > Two-factor authentication, select your account, tap SMS or WhatsApp, then Use different phone number. Instagram sends a 6-digit code to the new number to confirm it, then shows you a fresh list of backup codes. Save them.

Instagram WhatsApp code not arriving

WhatsApp is not a standalone method. Instagram only lets you turn it on after text message 2FA is already active, and the code goes to WhatsApp on that same number. So:

  • WhatsApp needs to be installed and working on the number linked to your Instagram.
  • If you moved WhatsApp to a new number but Instagram still has the old one, the code won't reach you.
  • When WhatsApp fails, the SMS method on the same number is your fallback.

Codes from an authentication app

If you use an app like Google Authenticator or Duo Mobile, Instagram doesn't send anything. The code is generated on your phone, which is why Instagram calls this method the recommended one: it works without signal or SMS delivery.

If the code from the app is rejected:

  • Check the phone's clock. Authenticator codes depend on the time. Set date and time to automatic.
  • Make sure you're reading the right entry. If you have several Instagram or Meta entries in the app, pick the one for this account.
  • New phone? The old entry doesn't move by itself. If you lost the old phone, use a backup code (below).

Instagram lets you connect up to five devices to authentication app 2FA on your Meta Account, so a second phone or tablet can generate codes too. Setting it up only works from the Instagram app for iPhone or Android.

Use a backup code (recovery code)

Backup codes are the exit Instagram builds for exactly this situation. According to the Help Center, if a code can't be sent because of connectivity or delivery issues, you can still complete the login with a backup code. Each one is a one-time code you type in place of the login code.

The catch: you can only see or generate backup codes while you are logged in. To get them:

  1. Open Accounts Center (or Meta Account), then Password and security.
  2. Tap Two-factor authentication and choose your account.
  3. Tap Additional methods, then Backup codes.
  4. Copy them, screenshot them or save them somewhere you can reach without your phone.

If you think someone saw your codes, the same screen has Get new codes, which cancels the old set.

Trusted devices: skip the code next time

When you log in with 2FA, Instagram can ask whether to trust the device. Trusted devices don't need a code at later logins. That's convenient on your own phone and laptop. Instagram is clear that you shouldn't tap Trust this device on a public or shared computer.

After 2FA is on, you can also review login requests and remove trusted devices you don't recognize from the same security settings.

Lost access to your phone number or email

This is where people get stuck for real. Instagram says that if you can't access the email you registered with and you didn't link Instagram to Facebook, it can't give you access to the account. It also can't help you get back into your email account. Your options:

  • Recover the email or phone line first. Most email providers and carriers have their own recovery process.
  • If you can still log in somewhere, change the email and phone number on your profile right away to ones you control. Both the old and new email receive a request to confirm the change.
  • If you have a backup code, use it to log in, then update your details.

If you think your account was hacked

A code you didn't request, or a message saying your email was changed, is a red flag. Instagram's recovery path:

  1. Check your inbox for a message from [email protected]. If it says your email was changed, the secure my account option in that message may let you undo the change.
  2. Request a login link. On the login screen, tap Forgot password?, enter your username, email or phone number, and follow the link sent by email or text.
  3. Go to instagram.com/hacked in a browser if you can't use the username, email or phone on the account.
  4. Verify your identity if asked. For accounts with photos of you, Instagram may ask for a video selfie. The Help Center says that video is never visible on Instagram and is deleted within 30 days.

Once you're back in: change your password, turn on 2FA, confirm your phone and email, remove linked accounts you don't recognize in Accounts Center, and revoke access for suspicious third-party apps. Protect the account that holds your audience

If Instagram is where your followers, clients or brand deals live, a lockout is more than an annoyance. Every day without access is a day your audience can't reach you through your bio, your link or your DMs. A setup that survives the next missing code looks like this:

  • Authentication app as your main 2FA method, with SMS as a backup method if you want one.
  • Backup codes saved outside your phone, for example in a password manager or printed and stored at home.
  • Current phone number and email on the account, checked every time you change either.
  • A backup channel your followers already know. A link-in-bio page that doesn't depend on logging into Instagram keeps working while you sort things out. With VISU, that's your VisuLink at visu.to/yourname: the free plan holds 5 links plus 5 social icons, enough for your newsletter, YouTube, TikTok, WhatsApp and email. Quick recap

  • Wait, then check the destination: most missing codes go to an old number or email, or sit in spam.
  • SMS and WhatsApp share one number; WhatsApp only works after SMS 2FA is on.
  • Authentication apps don't send anything: check the phone's clock and the right entry.
  • Backup codes get you in when nothing arrives, but only if you saved them while logged in.
  • Hacked? Use the security email, Forgot password? or instagram.com/hacked.

Lock in your 2FA today, and give your audience a page that stays reachable no matter what happens to one login. You can set up your VisuLink for free at visu.to.

Frequently asked questions

Why is Instagram not sending me a verification code?

Usually the code is going to an old phone number or email, sitting in spam, or delayed by weak signal or roaming. Request it once, wait a few minutes, and check the destination shown on the code screen.

Why is my Instagram WhatsApp code not arriving?

WhatsApp codes only work after text message two-factor authentication is on, and they go to WhatsApp on that same number. If WhatsApp is not active on the number linked to Instagram, the code will not reach you.

How do I log in to Instagram without the code?

Use one of your backup codes in place of the login code. Instagram says backup codes let you finish logging in when a code cannot be sent because of connectivity or delivery issues.

Where do I find my Instagram backup codes?

While logged in, go to Accounts Center, then Password and security, then Two-factor authentication, choose your account, then Additional methods and Backup codes. You cannot see them once you are locked out.

What if I think my Instagram account was hacked?

Check for an email from [email protected] and use its secure my account option, request a login link with Forgot password, or go to instagram.com/hacked in a browser and follow the steps.
