How to Pin a Comment on Instagram (and What to Pin)

Every popular post gets the same question over and over in the comments. "Where can I buy this?" "What's the recipe?" "Link?" You answer it once, it sinks under fifty new comments, and the next person asks again. Pinning fixes that. A pinned comment stays at the top of the comment section, so the answer is the first thing people read.

This guide covers how to pin a comment on Instagram on iPhone and Android, why the option sometimes doesn't show, and, more importantly, what to pin so the feature actually does some work for you. Steps reflect the Instagram app as of October 2026. Menu labels can vary slightly by app version and device.

What pinning a comment does

When you pin a comment on one of your posts or reels, Instagram moves it to the top of the comment list and marks it as pinned. Instagram announced the feature in 2020 with a limit of up to three pinned comments per post, and that's still the number to plan around.

A few things worth knowing before you start:

  • You can only pin comments on your own posts. You can't pin a comment on someone else's post, even if you wrote it.
  • Pinning is per post. A pinned comment on one reel doesn't carry over to your other posts.
  • The person who wrote the comment may be notified that you pinned it. That's part of the appeal: it's a small public thank-you.
  • Links in comments aren't clickable. A URL typed into a comment shows up as plain text. This matters a lot for what you pin, and we'll come back to it.
A pinned "link in my bio" only works if the page it points to puts the right link first.

How to pin a comment on Instagram (iPhone)

  1. Open the post or reel on your profile.
  2. Tap the comment icon to open the comments.
  3. Swipe left on the comment you want to pin.
  4. Tap the pin icon (it looks like a thumbtack).
  5. If Instagram asks you to confirm, tap Pin comment.

The comment jumps to the top of the list. To pin a second or third one, repeat the same steps.

How to pin a comment on Instagram (Android)

  1. Open the post or reel on your profile.
  2. Tap the comment icon.
  3. Tap and hold the comment you want to pin. A bar of options appears at the top of the screen.
  4. Tap the pin icon.
  5. Confirm with Pin comment if prompted.

On some Android versions a single tap on the comment is enough to bring up the options. If tapping and holding opens a reply instead, try a short tap.

How to unpin or replace a pinned comment

To unpin, repeat the same gesture (swipe left on iPhone, tap and hold on Android) on the pinned comment and tap the pin icon again, then confirm Unpin.

If you already have three pinned comments and want to pin a new one, unpin one of the old ones first. Think of the three slots as prime real estate. If something new and more useful comes in, swap it in.

Can you pin your own comment?

On your own post, yes in most cases: write the comment, then pin it the same way you'd pin anyone else's. This is the most common way creators put an answer at the top on purpose instead of waiting for someone to ask.

If the pin icon doesn't appear on your own comment, there's a simple workaround: wait for the first follower who asks the question, reply to them with the answer, and pin their comment. The question and your reply both show at the top, which reads naturally.

Why the pin option isn't showing

If you can't find the pin icon, check these in order:

  • It's not your post. Pinning only works on posts and reels published from your account.
  • Your app is out of date. Update Instagram from your app store, close it fully and open it again.
  • You're on a computer. The steps above are for the mobile app. If you don't see the option on the web, pin from your phone.
  • The gesture is different on your device. Try both a swipe left and a tap and hold. The action bar looks different between iPhone and Android.
  • The comment was hidden or filtered. Comments caught by your filters or hidden from view aren't the ones you want pinned anyway. Pick a visible one.

What to pin: six comments that do real work

Most guides stop at the steps. The more useful question is what deserves one of your three slots. A pinned comment is the first thing a curious person reads, so give it a job.

This is the big one. If a post shows a product, a recipe, a song, a course or an event, someone will ask where to get it. Since links in comments aren't clickable, the answer is to point to your profile: "Everything from this video is linked in my bio, second button."

That only works if the link in your bio actually leads to the item quickly. If your bio link opens a page with fifteen buttons and no order, people give up. Put the item from today's post at the top of your link page while the post is fresh. Our guide to writing a bio link description that converts covers how to label it so people tap.

2. The details people keep asking for

Ingredients, sizes, gear, the name of the filter, the date of the next show. Pin one comment that answers the practical question once. It saves you dozens of replies and keeps the thread on the content instead of logistics.

3. A correction or update

Got a price wrong in the caption? The event moved? You can edit a caption, but many people only skim it. A pinned comment that starts with "Update:" is hard to miss.

4. A great comment from a follower

Pinning a thoughtful or funny comment from your audience rewards the person and sets the tone for the rest of the thread. It tells newcomers what kind of conversation happens on your profile. Our guide to audience engagement strategies goes deeper on building that kind of community.

5. A question that starts the conversation

If a post invites opinions, pin a question that's easy to answer: "Which one would you pick, A or B?" It gives late arrivals an easy way in.

6. The rules for a giveaway or challenge

If a post runs a giveaway or a challenge, pin the short version of the rules and the deadline. People read the top of the comments before they read a long caption.

Here's how the pieces fit together for a post that sells or promotes something:

  1. In the caption, say where to find it: "Linked in my bio."
  2. Pin a comment that repeats it with a detail: "The brush set is the first link in my bio."
  3. Make sure your bio link opens a page where that item really is first.
  4. When people send the same question by DM, answer with a saved reply. Our guide to Instagram quick replies shows how to set those up.

The weak point is usually step 3. Instagram lets you add several links to your profile, but visitors still have to open your profile, tap the link area and pick the right one. A link-in-bio page like VISU gives you one address with every link laid out in the order you choose, so you can move this week's product to the top in seconds and push older ones down.

There's a second benefit: you can see whether the pin worked. VisuLink Analytics shows visits and link clicks, including your top links by clicks, so you can compare the days after you pinned "first link in my bio" with the days before. If clicks on that link don't move, the comment isn't doing its job. Try rewording it or pinning it on a different post.

Writing pinned comments that get read

A pinned comment competes with a list of other comments, so keep it tight:

  • Lead with the answer. "Recipe: first link in my bio" beats "Hey everyone, so many of you asked about this!"
  • Be specific about where. "Second button on my link page" saves people from scanning a list.
  • Keep it short. One or two lines show without expanding.
  • Skip the URL. It won't be clickable. A short, typeable address like visu.to/yourname is the exception, because people can type it if they want to.
  • Update it. If the item sells out or the event passes, unpin it or replace it with an update.

Quick checklist

  • Open your post, tap the comments, swipe left (iPhone) or tap and hold (Android), tap the pin icon.
  • You get up to three pinned comments per post.
  • Pin the answer to the question you get most, usually "where is the link?"
  • Point to your bio link and say which button.
  • Put today's item at the top of your link page.
  • Check link clicks a few days later to see if the pin helped.

A pinned comment answers one question for everyone at once, but it only works if the place it points to is ready. Create your free VISU page and give every pinned "link in my bio" a page that leads people straight to what they asked for.
